I hate those posts that are like “when a rlly good artist says theyre bad” and then has an aggressive gif attached that’s more or less “HOW DARE THEY FEEL THIS WAY ABOUT THEIR ART”
Like, you as an artist get down on your art. You’re like “This shit blows. It’s boring, flat, etc etc”. It gets 200 notes. But you’re unhappy with it. Everyone else loves it.
You need to understand that artists value their own art differently than the audience that follows. They’re not being stupid for being negative about their own creation. Honestly? That sort of negative thinking is responsible for a lot of personal growth in people’s art. They’re unhappy with their current state of ability – so they work through it.
Wanting to throttle someone for disliking their own art isn’t really as supportive as you think it is.
Encourage them, sure. Love your friend and what they create. But don’t fight their own opinions that drive them into further improvement. Don’t allow yourself, or others to become complacent when you both know improvement is possible.
It’s OKAY to be HAPPY with your art! It’s okay for THEM to be happy with their art! I’m not saying that negativity is the only source of improvement.
I’m just saying don’t invalidate an artist’s personal opinions about their own art.
“I love your art, I think you have an incredible grasp on anatomy. I agree with you that your coloring could be so much more and I’m so excited to see you pursue that.”
is totally different from
“NO PRECIOUS BABY DONT U DARE SAY THAT ABOUT YOUR ART IT’S PERFECT YOU’RE PERFECT EVERYTHING YOU TOUCH IS GOLD DONT LISTEN TO THE HATERS”
thanks for listening
side note: don’t offer criticism unless it’s been explicitly asked for
