The Urbance plotline is a lot more harmful than a cliche het love triangle, and there are other differences as well, like Book of Life is a major feature film while Urbance is just getting off the ground via crowd funding… But I dunno, it was something I really wanted to support, and now I feel gross about it. I know this was a tangent, but I thought I’d vent/get your opinion on it.

i’m not sure where everyone is getting the “in a world where everyone’s homo, one hetero couple must blah blah blah” angle from. Gaetan mentioned that this idea existed in the original trailer released a couple years ago—if the concept still exists, i am not seeing where. it’s possible that they excised the idea
here is the plot summary of urbance
“In a post-modern city torn by street violence, sex is prohibited because of a deadly genetical virus. Men and women have grown apart, hating each other until two young rebels, disowned by their own gangs, are leading the fight to live their love freely.”
In the crumbling inner city, sex kills. The urban landscape is split in two — men on one side, women on the other— opposing each other. COEVO seems to be the only hope: a government medical treatment developed to cure every single boy and girl except that those wearables haven’t produced the expected results yet…
Born among this lost generation of frustrated gangs, Kenzell and Lesya live each day as their last, defying anyone who stands in the way of their union. so, perhaps a focus on a het couple, a romeo and juliet thing…not the most original thing in the world, but not exactly a “pure het vs vile gays” story

note the timestamp. it seems like the people behind Urbance are set on keeping a tight relationship with fans and want to address any issues (there’s some other questions along those lines, including topics such as race and objectification of lesbian relationships)
here’s what i want to ask: how did this notion of “evil gay overlords” spread so quickly over tumblr over the course of a few days with seemingly almost no one going over to the project’s kickstarter page to fact-check? why were you all so quick to believe one post that lacked visual proof?
did the fact the cast is mostly black have anything to do with any of the above questions?
how many stories with all-white used the angle of “our forbidden straight love” with nary a hackle being raised?
and lastly, and most worryingly to me: will the distortion of facts regarding Urbance ‘s story hurt the chances of the project getting funded?
I agree with you about the Book of Life. I roll my eyes at het love triangles, but it’s not a harmful enough cliche to prevent me from wanting to see the movie for a billion other reasons. I’m conflicted over Urbance, though. Have you heard of it? It’s about and created almost entirely by black people, which is amazing, but apparently it’s got that “in a world where everyone’s homo, one hetero couple must go AGAINST THE ODDS~~” premise and apparently the villains are all nonbinary people?
