From the figure’s right-hand side (stage left). I am right-handed.

I know for me its unconnected, my light source generally comes from the upper left corner of the canvas and side and it’s 100% from this:
I was editing icons in ResEdit with a mouse before I ever picked up a pencil so “shadows follow the OS lighting” is just the default
