Scientifically and psychologically speaking, long periods of physical contact or just closeness stimulate chemicals in the brain that promote trust. If you’ve ever slept while cuddling somebody you just met, you know how incredibly comfortable you feel with them after you wake up, as if you’ve known each other for years. So yes, a long nap together is actually the ideal date if your goal is a relationship based on trust.

Here’s another important fact! Sleeping next to someone – whether it’s a dog, a cat, or a person – actually helps to regulate your heart rate as well as your brain chemistry. This is especially important if someone has afib or any other condition that makes their heart get all fluttery, or if someone’s having scary escape rhythms. Lying down next to someone with a steady heartbeat (and taking your medicine!) will really help synchronize your heart to theirs, and steady you out.

This is also one of the reasons why, it is theorized, long-term couples tend to die very close to each other; when one dies, the other does not have the regulating heart lying next to them at night, and their heartbeat loses its rhythm.

So yes, in a true and beautiful way, it is theorized those couples do die of a broken heart.
