Y2K is a bit of an outlier here.

While the other events could be summarized as “A preventable catastrophe occurs and is used as an excuse to increase the wealth and pursue the interests of the rich and powerful at the expense of everyone else,” Y2K came and went pretty quietly due to thousands of hours of collective work by those with the knowledge and expertise to fix the problem.

And then the media subsequently framed the situation as one where the problem was overblown or never existed in the first place.

It’s funny how that explanation nicely set the stage for framing every subsequent disaster and its consequences as being unavoidable, rather than a choice by our leaders to sacrifice human lives.
