Me: man, maybe some day if I work really hard and study really hard, some day I’ll draw well enough to work on a wow comic
blizzard entertainment, in the year of our lord 2018: uhhhhhhh extendable waist jaina
I’ve got some words, I usually scroll past posts like these but I see a lot of mutuals reblogging in agreement and I just wanted to put this out there:
Admitting you want to someday make an official comic for Warcraft, while in the same breath making fun of art that was done for Blizzard in an official capacity isn’t how you get jobs from Blizzard.
Or any company.
I’m going to use myself as an example, because I’m no fantastic illustrator–I’m okay, but the above image has rendering skills faaaar beyond anything I can do. But I was hired by Blizzard last year to make a short comic to celebrate WoW’s 13th anniversary. I didn’t know this was even a -thing- until they reached out to me.
Why me? I’m not the best artist, I don’t even actively draw Warcraft fanart anymore and hadn’t for nearly a year when I got the email. But I know a few things about myself: I’m a decent artist, I work hard, and I’m nice.
I cannot tell you how far just being -nice- has gotten me in the art side of my professional career. It’s gotten me jobs, it’s gotten me followers and supporters who are happy to pledge a dollar to my patreon just because they want to see me succeed. And for all of this, I’m immensely thankful.
Maybe you can do a better job than this comic, but by publishing petty thoughts about the way this comic was drawn sure as hell isn’t going to land you a gig with Blizzard. They can see you. I mean, they saw me.
Can you imagine being the artist who drew this reading “extendable waist lol”? How would you feel toward the person calling you out?
Anyway, that’s my rant. It’s fine if you disagree, but I couldn’t stay quiet.
