literally when i did a portrait for pillars of eternity i was freaking out and wondering how i’d be able to do this and the artists working there told all of us that honestly it’d just be easier if we took a free reference imagine and just. painted over it. change it enough so that you couldn’t get in trouble but…that’s a thing that artists do. like, if you look at half the artwork from mass effect it’s matte painting. half the concept work from dragon age of the main characters literally have hair pulled from magazines that is cut out and pasted on their heads. like?? ffs this shouldn’t be some big secret or source of shame. artists use reference. artists paint over reference

Hi Carmen, I know you work as a professional illustrator and I wanted to know if you showed any fanart or commissioned stuff like wow art to employers?

Heya!

I most certainly did place a number of fanart pieces in my portfolio! I have some Warcraft, Marvel, and Sega character pieces along side original art.

I wouldn’t fill a portfolio with only fanart, but fanart itself is not a bad thing! If you’re proud of it, show it! You’re still demonstrating your color, compositions and anatomy and attention to details, but fanart can also be used to demonstrate that you can work well with an established IP (intellectual property).

Ahhh thank you for the thoughtful answer! I have some fanart pieces I’m super proud of and was unsure if I should include them or not. Thank you!
