The prices are way to high. That is like, my biggest issue. I understand you need to make the money, as most people do, but if you’re charging the same amount of money for a cheap tv remote for something as simple as a damn sketch you’re kinda pissing me off already. And I promise you, I’ve seen worse. One example is an artist (not saying their name to piss them off sorta.) who charged 20$ for a line art sketch. Which jumped to 50$ for a simply shaded image, +$10 per character. Which jumped to a staggering 70 bucks for what most people would charge 30$ for. Then it jumped to 100$..then 120$….then 160$. So on and so forth. And their art wasn’t even good. And when they started making posts saying “why isn’t anyone commissioning everything’s reasonable” blah blah blah, I just sat and laughed.
Listen: artists making commissions: make the prices lower than you think you need to.
Art is a luxury, not a necessity. It doesn’t need to be affordable for everyone.
On top of that: prices online are way below what professional artists are charging / being payed. Just saying.

Also, this is kind of how supply and demand works. If you think you can do better for less money, then put the work in to draw as well as that person and see if you feel comfortable charging that little.

I don’t care how much time and effort you put in a single artwork when I can get double the quality for half the price at a local convention! Commission prices are frankly outrageous, especially when complete works aren’t that pricey.

It’s not line art with simple shading! It’s painstaking work! Nigga used charcoal, you can see the stains! Every single work had some mathematical principal at work! That’s not $50 dollar shading work! That’s his normal artwork! When I buy Escher, I know I’m buying genuine Escher pieces!

Basic business 101: My cost would actually have a lower bound of the opportunity cost of other things I could be doing, and considering I can charge $300/hour, that $50 would buy you about 10 minutes of my time.

You don’t charge $300 dollars an hour…cause you know you ain’t WORTH $300 dollars an hour. You ain’t being charitable. You’re understanding you ain’t jackshit.
If you treat art like it’s a job, you will get PAID like it’s a job. You will get paid as much as the market is willing to pay for it, no matter how much work you’d put into it. I spent HOURS, DAYS EVEN sculpting, trying to get everything in the right place, and color them as expressively as I can. You know why I never would sell them?
Cause I know for a factoid that my pieces of shit won’t even get $1.50. And that’s okay, cause that’s how the free market works.
Set your prices to however you want them, but don’t be complaining that no one pays for them. Once you understand that it’s the customers that truly set how much you’re worth, that is how you’ll start to become a great artist, possibly a better person.
Actually yes, this is a thing you say, but usually it’s coded as “I’ve decided not to pursue this offer” or, as I put it in my last resignation letter, “I’ve decided to take another position elsewhere.” This sort of thing happens all the time, for the exact reasons you listed, people just typically have a lot more tact than you do.
Also that second paragraph is funny because my tax return certainly says I’m worth that much; but hey I’m just some weirdo that believes forms filed w/ the IRS over some random goober on the internet!
