The prices are way to high. That is like, my biggest issue. I understand you need to make the money, as most people do, but if you’re charging the same amount of money for a cheap tv remote for something as simple as a damn sketch you’re kinda pissing me off already. And I promise you, I’ve seen worse. One example is an artist (not saying their name to piss them off sorta.) who charged 20$ for a line art sketch. Which jumped to 50$ for a simply shaded image, +$10 per character. Which jumped to a staggering 70 bucks for what most people would charge 30$ for. Then it jumped to 100$..then 120$….then 160$. So on and so forth. And their art wasn’t even good. And when they started making posts saying “why isn’t anyone commissioning everything’s reasonable” blah blah blah, I just sat and laughed.
Listen: artists making commissions: make the prices lower than you think you need to.Art is a luxury, not a necessity. It doesn’t need to be affordable for everyone.
On top of that: prices online are way below what professional artists are charging / being payed. Just saying.
This is entitlement.
this fucking guy
DRAW IT YOURSELF IF IT’S TOO DAMN PRICEY
Who fucking charges lower than 30$ for a commission? You fucking slime.
If it’s too much money learn to draw yourself you nasty piece of dog shit. An artist’s time and effort is worth the money, because art isn’t something that magically appears on a canvas. It takes planning and time and process.
Also you don’t EVER get to decide what is too much for art when you’re not the artist.
Also, this is kind of how supply and demand works. If you think you can do better for less money, then put the work in to draw as well as that person and see if you feel comfortable charging that little.
Jesus fuck, is this Tumblr artist culture in a nutshell?
Like, I get it. Insert Andrew Ryan’s “sweat of brow’ quote here and all, but the dude literally described someone who is charging $50 for a shaded image!
$50 dollars for not even a color picture, but a shading!
You can get a good AAA game with much more professional artistry to look at for that price.
I don’t care how much time and effort you put in a single artwork when I can get double the quality for half the price at a local convention! Commission prices are frankly outrageous, especially when complete works aren’t that pricey.
>“Also you don’t EVER get to decide what is too much for art when you’re not the artist.”
Bitch, you ain’t the goddamn market! You adjust prices depending on how the customers are buying. Your work cost as much someone will pay for it! That’s basic business 101! Imagine if buying art supplies ran on the same logic…
“YOU DON’T GET TO TELL ME YOU CAN GET AN AFFORDABLE, MORE POWERFUL WACOM TABLET! YOU DON’T GET TO SAY IT’S TOO EXPENSIVE! YOU AIN’T THE ONE THAT MADE IT!”
For all intensive purposes, they can and they will. That’s why it’s not your job to set a price, but to show off why you’re worth the price!
Ahh yes
It’s only a
shaded
image
nbd
How egotistical do you have to be to compare your poorly shaded work to MC-FUCKING-ESCHER!?
Guess fucking what? Escher didn’t commission fucking character sketches! He did full blown artwork! I’d be glad to pay well beyond normal prices because YOU’RE PAYING ESCHER FOR A FULL PAINTING.
It’s not line art with simple shading! It’s painstaking work! Nigga used charcoal, you can see the stains! Every single work had some mathematical principal at work! That’s not $50 dollar shading work! That’s his normal artwork! When I buy Escher, I know I’m buying genuine Escher pieces!
Wanna know how I know that you guys aren’t Escher?
http://earthboundhorror.tumblr.com/commissions
That’s your average work ethic! Fuck mathematics! Fuck color theory! Fuck even decent understandings of sketches! Pay for my shit!
I can and will bring up more!
Basic business 101: My cost would actually have a lower bound of the opportunity cost of other things I could be doing, and considering I can charge $300/hour, that $50 would buy you about 10 minutes of my time.
Like I said. Egomania.
Can you imagine trying to get a job with this mindset? “Fuck you, employer! You’re not worth my opportunity cost. I could be working with you, but you’re not worth my time and pay!”
(FYI, this is why I choke on my own frustration at people that whine about doing work “for exposure”. YES, I KNOW YOU WON”T GET PAID! NEGOTIATE BETTER, DON’T ACCEPT IT, AND MOVE THE FUCK ON! STOP GETTING AN EGO OVER IT)
You don’t charge $300 dollars an hour…cause you know you ain’t WORTH $300 dollars an hour. You ain’t being charitable. You’re understanding you ain’t jackshit.
If you treat art like it’s a job, you will get PAID like it’s a job. You will get paid as much as the market is willing to pay for it, no matter how much work you’d put into it. I spent HOURS, DAYS EVEN sculpting, trying to get everything in the right place, and color them as expressively as I can. You know why I never would sell them?
Cause I know for a factoid that my pieces of shit won’t even get $1.50. And that’s okay, cause that’s how the free market works.
Set your prices to however you want them, but don’t be complaining that no one pays for them. Once you understand that it’s the customers that truly set how much you’re worth, that is how you’ll start to become a great artist, possibly a better person.
Actually yes, this is a thing you say, but usually it’s coded as “I’ve decided not to pursue this offer” or, as I put it in my last resignation letter, “I’ve decided to take another position elsewhere.” This sort of thing happens all the time, for the exact reasons you listed, people just typically have a lot more tact than you do.
Also that second paragraph is funny because my tax return certainly says I’m worth that much; but hey I’m just some weirdo that believes forms filed w/ the IRS over some random goober on the internet!
