Back then, I did not believe in vampires. I did not believe in werewolves, or in mermaids or sirens; nor shapeshifters, skinwalkers, or the undead. I did not believe in monsters, for this was the world of man and why should men fear things that did not exist? I should have feared the creatures of the devil— but now, I am among their ranks.
